In today's complex healthcare landscape, being a successful doctor is no longer just about medical expertise. The role of a doctor is multifaceted and requires a broad set of skills. Recognizing the gaps that traditional medical education may leave, the IMGSOS International Doctors' Debate (IDD) Competition seeks to equip IMG doctors with the knowledge and expertise to address the multifarious challenges they face in their workplace and communities, beyond the clinical aspect.

The IDD Competition isn't just about winning debates; it's an immersive experience that moulds you into a leader ready to tackle tomorrow's healthcare challenges. Eligibility Requirements & Selection Criteria

  • Qualification: must be a qualified doctor with a valid medical license from Australia or overseas.
  • Process: must submit an application form and a CV.
  • Past achievements: demonstrated excellence in clinical and non-clinical endeavours.
  • Influence: Evidence of positive impact in the medical community or beyond.
  • Aspiration: A clear vision of their future roles in shaping the healthcare landscape.
  • Knowledge: A strong grasp of the subject areas mentioned above, including leadership & healthcare management, law & medico-legal issues, business & finance, ethics & professional conduct, Politics & Healthcare Policy.
  • This competition involves a selective process and is free of charge.

Competition Structure

Teams

Participants will be in teams of two. Applicants have the option to apply with a friend. If someone applies without a partner, we will pair them with another participant.

Rounds

The competition begins with an initial round featuring 32 teams, which is then followed by 5 elimination rounds leading up to the grand final.

Format

  • Participants will receive a 10-page debate scenarios 30 days prior to their presentations, allowing ample time for research and the exchange of written submissions between the teams.
  • Debates will be held online via Zoom between 6 pm & 9 pm AEST during weekdays. The Grand Final, however, might be conducted in-person at a venue in Melbourne, Australia, and will also be broadcast online.

Duration

  • Debate Presentation: 30 minutes - both sides present their arguments and counterarguments.
  • Judges' Deliberation: 10 minutes - Judges discuss and assess the points made by both parties.
  • Announcement of Outcome and feedback: 10 minutes - Judges will provide feedback for each participant. At the end of each round, progressing teams will be announced via email.

Judges

The panels will be comprised of esteemed professionals including high-caliber doctors, directors, well-known academics, lawyers, financial advisers, businessmen and industry leaders.

Evaluation Criteria

Participants will be judged on their clarity of argument, ensuring points are lucid and coherent. The depth and relevance of evidence presented will be critical, reflecting thorough research. Effective teamwork and sharp rebuttal skills are essential, showcasing seamless collaboration and counter-arguments. Lastly, a polished presentation style—articulation, audience engagement, and time adherence—will round out the assessment. Respectful and professional conduct is expected throughout.

Prizes

  • Winning Team: A cash prize of A$1,000.
  • Education: A course credit worth $2,000 with IMGSOS, to further enhance their professional skills and help them prepare for their medical accreditation exams in Australia.
  • Recognition: A certificate of achievement.

  • Front Runner: A cash prize of A$500.
  • Education: A course credit worth $1,000 with IMGSOS, to further enhance their professional skills and help them prepare for their medical accreditation exams in Australia.
  • Recognition: A certificate of achievement.

  • Wednesday, 1 November 2023: Registration Opens.
  • Friday, 26 January 2024: Registration Closes.
  • Friday, 2 February 2024: Shortlisted Teams Are Announced (11 am AEST)
  • Monday, 5 February 2024: Topics and Debate Scenarios are released (11 am AEST).
  • Monday, 19 February 2024: Every Team Provides a 2-page Written Submission (11 am AEST)
  • Wednesday, 21 February 2024: IMGSOS will help opposing teams exchange their written submissions (4 pm AEST).
  • Wednesday, 28 February 2024: Competition Schedule is Released (1 pm AEST).
  • Monday, 4 March 2024: Initial Round Starts
  • Friday, 8 March 2024: Progressing Teams are Announced (11 am AEST).
  • Monday, 11 March 2024: Elimination Rounds Start .
  • Friday, 15 March 2024: Finalists and Semi-Finalists are announced (11 am AEST).
  • Friday, 15 March 2024: Semi-Final Round (7 pm AEST)
  • Monday, 18 March 2024: Grand Final (7 pm AEST) and Prize Award.
